FRAUDS-SCAMS
Internet Auctions
The Bait: Shop in a "virtual marketplace" that offers a huge selection of products at great deals.
The Catch: After sending their money, consumers say they've received an item that is less valuable than promised, or, worse yet, nothing at all.
The Safety Net: When bidding through an Internet auction, particularly for a valuable item, check out the seller and insist on paying with a credit card or using an escrow service.

Internet Access Services
The Bait: Free money, simply for cashing a check.
The Catch: Consumers say they've been "trapped" into long-term contracts for Internet access or another web service, with big penalties for cancellation or early termination.
The Safety Net: If a check arrives at your home or business, read both sides carefully and look inside the envelope to find the conditions you're agreeing to if you cash the check. Read your phone bill carefully for unexpected or unauthorized charges.

Credit Card Fraud
The Bait: Surf the Internet and view adult images online for free, just for sharing your credit card number to prove you're over 18.
The Catch: Consumers say that fraudulent promoters have used their credit card numbers to run up charges on their cards.
The Safety Net: Share credit card information only when buying from a company you trust. Dispute unauthorized charges on your credit card bill by complaining to the bank that issued the card. Federal law limits your liability to $50 in charges if your card is misused.

International Modem Dialling
The Bait: Get free access to adult material and pornography by downloading a "viewer" or "dialler" computer program.
The Catch: Consumers complained about exorbitant long-distance charges on their phone bill. Through the program, their modem is disconnected, then reconnected to the Internet through an international long-distance number.

The Safety Net: Don't download any program to access a so-called "free" service without reading all the disclosures carefully for cost information. Just as important, read your phone bill carefully and challenge any charges you didn't authorize or don't understand.

Web Cramming
The Bait: Get a free custom-designed website for a 30-day trial period, with no obligation to continue.
The Catch: Consumers say they've been charged on their telephone bills or received a separate invoice, even if they never accepted the offer or agreed to continue the service after the trial period.

The Safety Net: Review your telephone bills and challenge any charges you don't recognize.
Multilevel Marketing Plans/ Pyramids
The Bait: Make money through the products and services you sell as well as those sold by the people you recruit into the program.
The Catch: Consumers say that they've bought into plans and programs, but their customers are other distributors, not the general public. Some multi-level marketing programs are actually illegal pyramid schemes. When products or services are sold only to distributors like yourself, there's no way to make money.

The Safety Net:
Avoid plans that require you to recruit distributors, buy expensive inventory or commit to a minimum sales volume.
Travel and Vacation.
The Bait: Get a luxurious trip with lots of "extras" at a bargain-basement price.
The Catch: Consumers say some companies deliver lower-quality accommodations and services than they've advertised or no trip at all. Others have been hit with hidden charges or additional requirements after they've paid.

The Safety Net: Get references on any travel company you're planning to do business with. Then, get details of the trip in writing, including the cancellation policy, before signing on.

SCARY
A new threat to your computer comes in new malware that can infect your computer. It hides until you access specific files or web sites. It can steal passwords, files, and then delete any trace of itself.

Brian Denehy, security assurance engineer at Cyber Trust, states majority of new malware uses some type of stealth in an attempt to remain undetected before, during and after an attack.

Spyware is loosely defined as, "any program, which gathers information (about you) through an Internet connection -- without your knowledge." Spyware can gather information about your email address, keystrokes, browser cookies, passwords, credit card numbers, and can send advertisements -- even if you're not connected to the Internet!

Ensuring Your Computer is Protected from Identity Theft
More and more cases of Identity Theft are occurring electronically through the use of key loggers and spyware programs installed on the users computer. It is essential that you protect your computer from these robot applications using a quality spyware detection and prevention program.

Use a spyware program engineered to detect identity threats. Identity Patrol is produced by Patrol Software Labs ( http://www.patrolsoftware.com ) and is free to download. You can run a full security diagnostic check to see if there are any identity theft threats on your computer and is something every computer user should do on a regular basis in today’s day and age.

What is an Identity Thief?
Essentially, an identity thief attempts to set himself up as you. Using your personal information, a thief may change your mailing address to divert your monthly billing statements to himself. Posing as you, he will apply for credit cards, an apartment lease, utility and cable TV services, Internet providers, and more. The crook may take out a car loan or even a home mortgage – all in your name. The identity thief may even obtain a driver’s license.

How Can You Prevent Identity Theft?
Guard your personal information carefully. Shred identifying documents before trashing them. Remove address labels from magazines and catalogs before recycling them. Tear up promotional credit card offers, and destroy credit cards you do not use regularly, and close out any dormant accounts.
If paying online use a service like PayPal. The minute any charge is recorded on your account you will get a notice from PayPal. Paying with a credit card, bank, it may take up to a month for you to get your statement which gives the con time to clean out your account, use up your credit card limit.

How can you tell if your identity is stolen?
Check your accounts and billing statements every month. Audit these carefully, and report any unknown charges. If you fail to receive a regular bill on time, contact the issuing company immediately. Be alert for any unexpected invoices, charge accounts, or other unanticipated legal or financial issues. The most important thing you can do is to check your credit status regularly.

Identity Patrol is produced by Patrol Software Labs http://www.patrolsoftware.com and is free to download. You can run a full security diagnostic check to see if there are any identity theft threats on your computer and is something every computer user should do on a regular basis in today’s day and age.

Another Scam Reported From the FBI
The FBI determined fraudsters compromised victim accounts and contacted financial institutions to change the victim profile information (i.e. email addresses, telephone numbers and bank account numbers).

The TDoS attacks used automated dialling programs and multiple accounts to overwhelm victims' cell phones and land lines with thousands of calls. When victims answered the calls they heard dead air (nothing on the other end), an innocuous recorded message, advertisement, or a telephone sex menu. Calls were typically short in duration but so numerous that victims changed their phone numbers to terminate the attack.

These TDoS attacks were used as a diversion to prevent financial and brokerage institutions from verifying victim account changes and transactions. Fraudsters were afforded adequate time to transfer funds from victim brokerage and financial online accounts.
Protection from TDoS attacks and other types of fraud requires consumers to be vigilant and proactive. In Newark’s Public Service Announcement (PSA), they recommend consumers protect themselves by:
Implement security measures for all financial accounts by placing fraud alerts with the major credit bureaus if you believe they were targeted by a TDoS attack or other forms of fraud.
Use strong passwords for all financial accounts and change them regularly.
· Obtain and review your annual credit report for fraudulent activity.

If you were a target of a TDoS attack, immediately contact your financial institutions, notify your telephone provider, and promptly report it to the IC3 website at: www.IC3.gov.
